🚨 Referee Abuse Prevention Policy: AYSO Takes a Stand
AYSO is proud to announce the adoption of U.S. Soccer’s Referee Abuse Prevention Policy (Policy 531-9), effective March 2025. This marks a major step forward in protecting our referees and promoting a culture of respect across all matches.
Why This Matters
Referees are essential to the game. Whether youth or adult, they deserve a safe, supportive environment. Abuse—physical or verbal—will not be tolerated. This policy ensures stronger consequences for misconduct and empowers everyone to help uphold the integrity of the sport.
Key Highlights
- Zero Tolerance: Abuse, assault, or gross misconduct toward referees will result in disciplinary action.
- Stronger Penalties: Sanctions range from multi-game suspensions to lifetime bans, depending on severity.
- Youth Referee Protection: Offenses against youth officials carry triple penalties compared to adult cases.
- Community Accountability: All participants—coaches, players, spectators, and volunteers—are expected to model respectful behavior.
Reporting Misconduct
Referees and witnesses should submit detailed reports including:
- Match details (teams, age group, score, date)
- Specific description of the incident
- Clear language, even if uncomfortable to write
Reports should be sent to your Regional Commissioner, Area Director, or Section Director for review and action.
What You Can Do
- Coaches: Lead by example. Set the tone for sportsmanship.
- Players: Respect the officials, even when calls don’t go your way.
- Parents & Spectators: Cheer for your team—never against the referee.
- Referees: Know your voice matters. Report abuse and help keep the game safe.
Together, we can create a positive, inclusive soccer experience for everyone. Let’s protect the game by protecting those who serve it.
