"Don't Play with the Flu" Program Starts at AYSO
AYSO is committed to providing world class youth soccer programs that enrich children's lives and to promote healthy, active lifestyles, but our vision is only successful if our players, coaches, referees and families are healthy enough to attend practice and participate in games!
AYSO has partnered with Women's Professional Soccer, MedImmune and soccer stars Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain on "Don't Play with the Flu", a national effort to raise awareness about the importance of getting a seasonal flu vaccination this year.
We will distribute a "What's Your Game Plan" brochure to each coach and have more copies available in the shed. These family friendly brochures offer personal advise from Hamm and Chastain, plus helpful tips on ways to help prevent the flu and other resources and information.
You can also visit www.dontplaywiththeflu.com for tips, quizzes and one-of-a-kind videos and photos. Also MadImmunine will donate $1 (up to $50,000) to Families Fighting Flu, a not-for-profit organization committed to flu prevention, for each person who becomes a fan of the Facebook page.
Please help us stay healthy! If your child has flu-like symptoms please keep them home. |
Please remember that you have more games in the spring, so don't lose your uniform....especially the socks! For those teams considering playing indoor soccer at one of Wichita's facilities, be aware that those programs are not AYSO sponsored and do not always follow the same family friendly philosophies. Please represent AYSO well and exhibit good sportsmanship and positive coaching! |

What's the Deal with all of the Different Restarts?
Many people are confused with the various restarts that are used in a soccer match. All told, there are 8 basic ways that the referee will use to restart the match. Four of these: the kickoff, the throw-in, the goal kick and the corner kick are used when the ball leaves the field of play. The other four: the direct free kick, the indirect free kick, the penalty kick and the dropped ball are used when the referee stops the match while the ball is in play. Today I will talk about the four restarts that are used when the ball leaves the field of play.
The kickoff is used at the beginning of each half and after a goal is scored. All players must be on their half of the field, and the non-kicking team must be outside the center circle as well. The ball is considered to be in play when it is kicked forward. A goal can be scored directly from a kickoff.
The throw-in is used when the ball leaves the field of play by crossing completely over either touchline. Possession of the ball is awarded to the opponent of the team that touched the ball last (not necessarily the team who kicked it). The ball must be delivered from behind and over the head. At the moment of release, part of each foot must be on the ground on or behind the touchline. The ball cannot be thrown directly into the goal for a score.
The goal kick is used when the ball completely crosses the goal line after being last touched by the attacking team and no goal is scored. The ball is placed anywhere within the goal area and kicked back into play by the defending team. The ball is in play when it leaves the penalty area into the field of play. In U8, the ball is in play when it leaves the goal area (since there is no penalty area). In U5/U6 the ball is placed on the goal line (since there is no goal area), and it is in play when it is kicked and moved.
The corner kick is used when the ball completely crosses the goal line last touched by the defending team, and no goal is scored. The ball is placed anywhere on or in the corner arc and kicked directly into play by the attacking team. A goal can be scored directly from a corner kick.
There are additional restrictions on all of these restarts that I have not included in the interest of space. If you want to learn more, you can refer to the link "Laws of the Game" on the Region 208 website, or just ask your ref.
Also I am always in need of new topics for future newsletters. Feel free to Email me questions to REF@AYSO208.org Take care, and we'll see you on the fields.
